Alden—on the shore of Torch Lake, 1908 structure features artifacts and photos of the area from mid-1800s, open through August Thurs., Sat., and Sunday.
Bellaire Area Historical Society Museum
Bellaire—houses artifacts, pictures and maps of Bellaire area from 1865 to 1965, also features extensive newspaper collection from that period, open through August Mon.-Fri. 11 a.m.-3 p.m., free, 202 N. Bridge St.
Benzie Historical Museum
Benzonia—Housed in a century-old church building. Features artifacts pertaining to pioneers who carved a living from a northern Michigan wilderness. 10 a.m. -4 p.m. Tues.-Sat., through Dec. 31 — also open Mondays 10 a.m.-4 p.m. through August; $2 adult, 50 cents for students ages 5-18 (free admission under age five or museum members), $5 family rate. Grand Traverse Heritage Center
Traverse City—A non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of the Grand Traverse region. The Heritage Center maintains the Con Foster Collection and a museum on Grand Traverse history. 322 Sixth St.; 231-995-0313.
Grand Traverse Lighthouse
Northport—Climb the 47-foot tower for a superb view of the Fox Islands and the Manitou Passage. The complex includes the 1858 lighthouse building (now a museum), fog horn building, an oil house and beachstone planters. Michigan State Park Motor Vehicle Permit required for entry to lighthouse grounds. Daily pass for parking is $4. Museum admission charge: $1.
